Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman began as a painting major at Buffalo State College but decided to switch to photography, preffering its interactive nature to that of painting. Sherman's pictures are cinematic images of herself in different guises. She uses archetypes of women such as B-movie and film noir actresses in criticism of the societal placement of women. In 1995 she won a MacArthur Fellowship and is said to have as much influence on young artists as did Andy Warhol.
